Follow the good things ↓

October 16–17, 2026 · Montgomery to Kerrville

The long way to a good table.

Montgomery → TX-105 west → Brenham → US-290 west through Giddings → Austin → Dripping Springs → Johnson City → Fredericksburg.

Our planning choice is the US-290 corridor, the likely Google starting point rather than the longer I-10 / San Antonio swing. Live Google routing and Friday traffic were not verified. Let Maps choose the Austin crossing; Bastrop is an alternate corridor, not a required stop on US-290.

Leave mid-morning; aim for Pieous before 2pm. If the ETA is too late, lunch at Pecan Street in Johnson City instead. Saturday, take US-87 south to Comfort, then I-10 west to Kerrville for the cafe stop. Direct TX-16 south is shorter, but skips Comfort.

Budget compass: prices are planning estimates per person for food + a nonalcoholic drink, before tax and tip (except Pint & Plow’s tax-inclusive menu). Alcohol and shared extras can exceed $35. Breakfast may cost less than $20.

Montgomery

Friday morning · off FM 1486
Two seats. An open road. Something delicious ahead.

Friday · October 16

Lunch, somewhere west of ordinary.

Austin outskirts → Johnson City

Pieous

An airy, informal pizza stop on the edge of the Hill Country, with outdoor seating and room to exhale. The draw is seriously good sourdough pizza and house pastrami.

166 Hargraves Dr., Building H, Austin, TX 78737

Fri: 8am–2pm & 4–8pm; lunch begins 11am$22–32 / person
For the table

Margherita pizza · Pastrami sandwich

A little planning: Aim for 12:30–1pm. The 2pm lunch closure is a hard planning constraint; if traffic slips, keep going to Johnson City. Reservation policy not confirmed.

The review read: Review listings repeatedly single out the pizza and pastrami; this is a food-first stop, not a secluded country garden.

A change of plans can be a good thing.

Plan B · Pecan Street Brewing

A former feed-and-hardware building on the courthouse square, with a sociable beer garden. A wonderfully unhurried arrival in small-town Texas.

106 E. Pecan Dr., Johnson City, TX 78636

Fri: 11am–9pm$22–35 / person
For the table

Chicken Fried Steak ($24) · Margherita pizza (14-inch $16.50)

A little planning: Best if lunch is late: no afternoon closure listed. Allow extra time for a busy Friday; call about seating.

The review read: Review summaries favor the beer-garden setting and hearty pub food; chicken-fried steak feedback is not unanimous.

Friday evening

A little Germany. A lot of charm.

Fredericksburg

Altdorf Restaurant & Biergarten

A historic Main Street setting and leafy biergarten make dinner feel like a little European escape. German classics fit the town—and the budget.

301 W. Main St., Fredericksburg, TX 78624

Fri: 11am–9pm (tourism listing)$26–35 / person
For the table

Jägerschnitzel ($23) · Wurst Platte ($21)

A little planning: Call today about a table for two and request the garden if weather permits. Reservation policy not verified. Go around 5pm rather than peak dinner.

Check before going: Friday hours come from the local visitor bureau, not a date-specific restaurant notice.

A change of plans can be a good thing.

Plan B · The Ausländer

A lively Bavarian-style dining room and biergarten: convivial rather than hushed. A classic Fredericksburg evening over schnitzel and sausage.

323 E. Main St., Fredericksburg, TX 78624

Fri: 11am–9:30pm$26–35 / person
For the table

Jägerschnitzel · Bratwurst

A little planning: No weekend reservations advertised; arrive early and expect a walk-in wait. Live music is not confirmed for your date.

Check before going: Menu prices and October 16 entertainment unconfirmed.

The review read: Atmosphere and sausage draw praise; schnitzel/value reviews are mixed, so this stays a backup.

Plan B · Hondo’s on Main

An easygoing Texas music-yard atmosphere with outdoor tables and real local character. Choose it for a more spirited night, not a quiet candlelit dinner.

312 W. Main St., Fredericksburg, TX 78624

Fri: kitchen 11am–9pm; bar until 11pm$22–32 / person
For the table

Stuffed & Roasted Jalapeños · Warm Queso Dip

A little planning: Go early, order food before 9pm, and ask how seating works. Reservation policy and October 16 music lineup unconfirmed. Add a main from the on-site menu.

Check before going: Both suggested dishes are starters; a current entrée list could not be reliably extracted.

Saturday · October 17

Good morning, Main Street.

Fredericksburg

Old German Bakery & Restaurant

A bustling family bakery with old-town warmth, pastry cases and the smell of breakfast. More authentic morning ritual than polished brunch scene.

225 W. Main St., Fredericksburg, TX 78624

Sat: 7am–3pm (published listing; call)$18–26 / person
For the table

Oma’s Pancake Breakfast · German pancake

A little planning: First come, first served; no reservations. Aim for opening, before the Main Street breakfast crowd.

Check before going: Official contact page confirms Saturday operation but its hours fail to render; 7am–3pm is search-listed, not directly confirmed.

A change of plans can be a good thing.

Plan B · Sunset Grill

A cheerful neighborhood brunch room away from the busiest Main Street stretch. The pleasure is a leisurely breakfast and generous comfort-food plates.

405 E. Live Oak St., Fredericksburg, TX 78624

Sat: 8am–2pm$20–28 / person
For the table

Caramelized Banana French Toast ($14) · The Sunsetter Benedict ($16.50)

A little planning: Arrive close to 8am; reservation policy not confirmed. Call the menu-listed local number before detouring.

Check before going: Phone conflict: menu lists 830-997-5904; location page lists 214-944-5515. Local number is not phone-tested.

Saturday lunch

Make a little room for Comfort.

US-87 south → Comfort → I-10 west

High’s Cafe & Store

Historic High Street, a colorful cafe-and-store setting, and a patio made for lingering. A lighter, charming pause before the river town.

726 High St., Comfort, TX 78013

Sat: 10am–5pm; online orders 10:15am–4:30pm$18–27 / person
For the table

Chunky chicken salad sandwich · Peppered pimiento cheese sandwich

A little planning: Aim for 11:30am–noon. Call for patio availability; reservation policy unconfirmed. Add a side and split the apricot bread pudding.

A change of plans can be a good thing.

Plan B · Comfort Pizza

A vintage filling-station setting with outdoor tables and mesquite-fired sourdough pizza. A little roadside nostalgia, without the chain-restaurant feel.

802 High St., Comfort, TX 78013

Sat: 11:30am–8:30pm (third-party listing)$20–30 / person
For the table

Margherita pizza · Pepperoni pizza

A little planning: Call ahead to reserve dough, not just a table; weekend dough can sell out. Outdoor seating is weather-dependent.

Check before going: Hours and current pizza prices not first-party verified. comfortpizza.com search result appears unrelated; it was not used as evidence.

Kerrville

Where the road meets the Guadalupe.

Stay a little longer

Five tables.
One river town.

Our Kerrville shortlist, in order of fit for the two of you.

1

Rails — A Café at the Depot

Best all-around · Lunch or early dinner

A restored railway-depot setting and courtyard patio give this the strongest all-around date-meal atmosphere. Stay for dessert after a relaxed lunch or early dinner.

615 E. Schreiner St., Kerrville, TX 78028

Sat: 11am–8:30pm safe planning window; site says until 9pm$25–35 / person
For the table

Chicken Florentine · B.L.A.T. sandwich

A little planning: Call for a reservation and ask specifically for the courtyard. Plan to eat before 8pm, not near the disputed closing time.

Check before going: Closing conflict: restaurant page says 9pm; local tourism listing says 8:30pm. Dishes corroborated by delivery menu; dine-in availability/prices unconfirmed.

The review read: Tripadvisor review consensus praises the courtyard, service and desserts, with occasional service disappointments.

2

Grape Juice

Best date-night energy · Dinner

A funky downtown wine-and-craft-beer spot with a relaxed social feel. Best for an intimate, unfussy dinner and something more interesting than standard pub food.

623 Water St., Kerrville, TX 78028

Sat: 11am–9pm$25–35 / person
For the table

Wild Boar Bolognese · Boom Boom Burger

A little planning: Call for dinner seating; reservation policy unconfirmed. Wine, a starter and a main can push you past budget.

Check before going: Dishes corroborated by Toast ordering; exact dine-in prices and availability unconfirmed.

3

Billy Gene’s Restaurant

Best river view · Lunch or early dinner

The Guadalupe River view is the reason to sit and stay. Traditional Texas comfort food makes it a dependable scenic lunch or early dinner.

1489 Junction Hwy., Kerrville, TX 78028

Sat: 11am–8:30pm$23–33 / person
For the table

Chicken-fried steak · Fried catfish bites

A little planning: Request a river-view seat when you call; it is a preference, not a guarantee. Reservation policy unconfirmed.

The review read: Reviewers favor the river setting and comfort food; chicken-fried steak experiences vary.

4

Pint & Plow Brewing Co.

Best laid-back local · Lunch or early supper

A characterful old-house brewery with outdoor seating and a genuinely local, laid-back feel. Best for a casual lunch or early supper.

332 Clay St., Kerrville, TX 78028

Sat: 8am–9pm; kitchen closes 8pm$20–29 / person
For the table

Reuben ($16, tax included) · The Green House veggie pizza ($18, tax included)

A little planning: No need to build the evening around a late meal: kitchen stops at 8pm. Call about seating; reservation policy unconfirmed.

Check before going: 8am opening does not establish when the full lunch menu starts; call if arriving before noon.

The review read: Review feedback favors sandwiches; pizza is more divisive. Ranked for the whole experience, not a claim of universal acclaim.

5

Café at the Ridge

Best garden escape · Saturday breakfast

A garden-marketplace escape outside central Kerrville. Make this the slow Saturday breakfast: wander the grounds, then settle into country cooking.

13439 S. Ranch Road 783, Kerrville, TX 78028

Sat: 8am–9pm; breakfast 8–11am$20–29 / person
For the table

Hill Country Breakfast ($13.55) · French Toast ($10.99)

A little planning: Go before 10am for breakfast and allow for the drive out of town. Confirm kitchen hours and seating by phone.

Check before going: Saturday 9pm closing is published by the marketplace; breakfast dishes are only listed until 11am. Garden condition and entertainment not verified.

A good plan. Not a promise.

For Friday, October 16 & Saturday, October 17, 2026. Research found active restaurant websites or local listings; these are published weekly hours, not phone-confirmed operation on the travel dates. No restaurant was called. Unexpected closures, sold-out dishes, weather, waits and patio seating remain unconfirmed. Call before a detour.

Recent-review evidence was uneven: Tripadvisor and Restaurantji summaries informed selected picks, but no complete, date-audited Google/Yelp consensus was established for all fourteen. Rankings reflect fit for this trip—atmosphere, food and budget—not a definitive citywide score. No music performance is promised.

Specific cautions stay with each restaurant: Pieous’s afternoon break; Altdorf’s listing-based hours; Old German Bakery’s unrendered official hours; Sunset Grill’s conflicting phone numbers; Comfort Pizza’s listing-only hours and unrelated domain; Rails’s conflicting closing times; menu availability and prices at Grape Juice and Rails; Pint & Plow’s morning service; and the Ridge’s breakfast cutoff.
